We have never been more convinced of using sunglasses for eye protection against damaging UV rays than after we read the Huffington Post’s article on what the sun’s rays do to your eyes and the delicate skin around your eyes.  We’re talking about getting skin cancers around the eye, cataracts, macular degeneration, blind spots, a cornea sunburn, and some other conditions we can’t even pronounce — all just because you don’t wear sunglasses.  More from the HuffPost article —

Here’s a common summertime scenario: People go to the shore for the day, and as they’re driving home their eyes feel kind of gritty, like maybe there’s sand in them.  By 10 p.m. they’re in agony and by 11 they’ve landed in the ER for a sunburned cornea, which can cause tremendous pain and even temporary blindness.

Not good.  And it’s not just adults that need UV eye protection, it’s also kids too.   You can create some shade (here’s tips on your shade options) as helpful defense against the sun’s rays, but let’s be clear — you should have quality sunglasses on hand for every member of the family for when you are driving and when you’re out enjoying recreation in the sun.  And here’s our recommendation …

We like Warby Parker sunglasses as eye protection because you get —

  • 100% UV Protection — not all of the online or retail sunglasses will give you 100% UV protection.  And some sunglasses might only say “absorbs UV” — this offers no guarantee!  Transparency in labeling counts!
  • Impact Resistant — for moms and dads, this is key.  We’ve ruined so many non-Warby sunglasses in the past as they fall out of purses, slide off our head to the ground as we bend over to pick up a toy, etc.  So this is a great feature.  And they have durable screws that stay put (yay! no lost frame arm!).
  • FREE Home Try-On Program — it’s really cool.  We picked five frames online that we liked.  In about 4 days we got the box.  And we got to see what we liked the most — the style and color, choice of prescription or non-prescription.
