Behr’s Color Smart app is a huge app! And we mean that literally. Most iPhone apps these days are averaging 23mb, but Color Smart took 10 minutes to download over wi-fi for a whopping 100mb. We weren’t too happy that it took so much space. But, of all the room painting apps we looked at, Color Smart truly has the most practical use and no data mining (you don’t have to register to save your work). Huge pluses!
You can color match (color capture) from photos. But it goes further. There’s a very useful tool to match the color with coordinating palettes. We liked this very much. It made the app more than inspiration; it actually did design work for us. And that’s what we really needed! Plus …
… we were really surprised to see that the coordinating palette selection took us to a “Preview Color” screen in which we had many typical rooms (including styles of rooms, like traditional and modern) to choose from. We then painted those rooms the colors of our palette to get an idea of how we would like our colors in real life.
Once we saw this “paint-your-room” feature, we immediately went searching in the app to see if we could upload a room picture of our own to paint it. But we couldn’t. Sigh. That’s not an option. Nonetheless, it’s very simple and useful technology. The final item we want to point out is the app’s paint calculator — the best and easiest to use that we’ve seen. We like this app! (Just bring down the file size, Behr.)
Olympic’s ColorClix is a lot like Benjamin Moore’s app except that you can more easily save colors via projects. You do have to register to save, but at least it’s a very simple registration. There is no color palette coordination. You can also browse Olympic’s pre-determined color palettes. A simple app.
Finally, there’s Valspar’s Color Connect app. It has a paint calculator tool that could be useful. But otherwise the app does just as its name suggests: connects you to a listing of Valspar’s colors. That’s it.
In all, we prefer the use and functionality of the Behr app because it gives us decision-making help instead of just leaving us with more color choices. Happy painting!
